Why You Should Write It Down Before Turning It Into eLearning
Why Write Down Your Content First?
Simple. To:
- Have a guide as you build your module or make your video.
- Have a guide in the future for what’s in your module or video without having the re-watch the whole thing.
- Keep written record of your procedure.
Let’s Unpack This
If you start with eLearning right away, then you’re always treating your eLearning platform as your only canvas. Putting it down on paper (or typing it up) first gives you the opportunity to create and see the big picture before committing to the module.
And, although it’s not always used by all, we also recommend a storyboard between the writing and the media.
Why Does a Storyboard Matter?
Because whether it’s just a PowerPoint of what you’re about to commit to module or a visual hand-drawn board for a video, it allows you to see the stages of each of your slides/steps beforehand.
This is important because way too many times we think we have the finished product, show it to the approvers, and they want changes. Am I right?
Having a storyboard gives you the power to show yourself and others how the written content is going to land when on media. It doesn’t mean there won’t be changes, but it’s a very good step toward final approval.
Is It One or the Other?
Like we said, storyboarding isn’t used all the time. We think it’s an excellent idea to spend the time on this step. But…if you have to choose between writing down the procedure or storyboarding before turning it into eLearning, choose writing down the procedure.
Why Did We Choose Writing It Down?
As explained in our Operations Manual blog, when you write down the most important steps first, (e.g. your Ops Manual), you now have the base content that will inform the creation of all your training materials, including eLearning.
As Time Goes On…
You’ll find that your topics may age or need updating. Instead of running for your eLearning module, start with updating your written content. Don’t do it the other way around. As we just explained, the written is the informant of the rest.
It may seem like a bunch to start with the written, but if you follow the right order, then your training material updates will always have a point of departure. Then, the updating progression makes sense and it’s easier to manage.
