Why You Need a Policies and Procedures Manual
Are you the only one who knows your company’s process? Then, you need a policies and procedures manual. This is why:
- Growth and Expansion
- Training
- Sleep
Let’s get into it.
Why You Need a Policies and Procedures Manual
You had your dreams of opening your business and you did. Congrats! What you didn’t realize is how much of everything you’d be doing.
And now, you’re the only one who knows the process, so people call you even on your days off to ask you about it, because it’s nowhere to be found on a document. You don’t mind, though. You said you’d give your new company your all, and that means 3 a.m. calls.
But does it have to?
Objections We Get to Creating Policies and Procedures Manuals
- I’m the only one who knows the job well enough so I just do it
- I don’t have time to write it down
- I tried hiring someone, but it takes me longer to train them than to do the job myself
- I have to concentrate on growing my business first
- I have no budget for it
If you’re aiming for a one-person show, the above steps are the way to accomplish that. But if you’re looking for growth and expansion (and hopefully some time off), then it’s important to document your process.
What About Franchising?
Maybe one day you’ll think about franchising. What will you give your franchisees as a Policies and Procedures manual they should follow? What will you give them for training their new employees?
We know it’s tough to let go of your “baby.” But, your business is bound to hit a hard stop if no one can replicate the process that’s inside your head.
Listen, even if you don’t like going on vacation, someone at home probably needs you there from time to time. So, get going and…
Set Up Your Training Systems to Last
Perhaps you already have an employee or a few, so you may think, “Ha! I don’t need this.” But…check yourself here:
When an employee is out sick or on vacation, does your team suffer? A part of your policies and procedures manual must include a training section. A good training section is one a supervisory team member understands in case they need to train others to perform different job functions.
Cross-training can also help your team members find new roles within the company, giving them another path to career development.
