Updating Your Training Materials to Stay Relevant
Ask yourself if you’d be happy with an employee who continued to do their job exactly as they had five years ago, regardless of new tools available to them or changes that had occurred in your field.
If your answer is no, then why should you approach your company’s learning program any differently?
Keeping your training program fresh and relevant to your industry is not just important—it’s imperative to your operation.
Can you just change the version date at the bottom and call it good?
While this is part of the update, keeping your training program fresh means more than updating the copyright date.
Your training should reflect where your organization is now, not necessarily where it was five years ago. If your training materials display a logo that changed years ago or show a wrong phone number, your team will, unconsciously or consciously, view the material as outdated, leaving them less likely to fully embrace the learning program.
OK, then…what if you just change the colors and add the new logo?
Keeping your training program fresh and relevant goes much deeper than that. As you work to update your training aesthetically, you have an opportunity to reevaluate it on more substantive levels. Ask yourself these questions:
- How has your company’s culture changed since the training was last updated? Is that culture shift reflected in the training?
- Have there been significant advances in your industry? Are these covered in your learning program?
- New training technologies arise constantly. Online training is more relevant than ever, for example. Is it appropriate to incorporate this modality into your program?
- Is the training comprehensive? Has anything been overlooked that should be added? Has a section left learners confused and should be strengthened?
