Do You Need an Instructional Design Degree to Get Started in ID?
Short answer: Here at Miranda Park Learning, we say no. Not necessarily in instructional design.
But, respectfully, there are plenty of people who have gone through a ton of schooling for this field.
Many instructional designers are emerging this year and we think it’s great! And, while we don’t think it’s necessary to have an ID degree to get started, we do think at least one thing is required: Hunger for education and learning.
What About That Instructional Design Degree?
If you have one, great! Education in instructional design is a fantastic skillset. But, the founder of Miranda Park Learning, does not, for example, have a degree in it.
How Did She Learn?
An amazing mentor. While she does hold a master’s degree from the University of Utah, you can hear the humility in her voice when she says how she learned instructional design: “From one of the best mentors I’ve ever had.”
So, if you wish to specifically be an instructional designer, here are a few tips on what we’d seek.
Who Do We Look For?
- People who are willing to learn
- Humility in the will to learn
- Goals that take you beyond Miranda Park Learning (although staying here is also awesome)
That’s right. It may appear we’re kicking people out with that last one, but here’s what it means: We want people whose dreams will bring them to Miranda Park Learning for a fantastic learning experience, but that take them beyond us.
What? Why?
It seems crazy, but we love people who want to make us their friendly competitor and collaborator in the future. Because our biggest desire for humanity is that learning never stops. That it keeps going forever. For that, learning can’t stop at just one company.
While our instructional designers will stop here and call us home for a while, we like the mixture of a futuristic, humble, go-getter, willing to learn, lover of education that takes it beyond us. This way, we’ll grow, too.
Did you see instructional design degree somewhere in there?
Neither did we.
