Cold Calling to Market Your Business
As we know, it’s the middle of a pandemic. It seems that businesses have either soared or fallen. But there are also the businesses that, like us, need to generate new leads and continue forward. In order to do that, we’ve done something we didn’t know we’d ever do: add cold calling to our marketing strategy.
Why Cold Call
Cold calling is a way to market the business, but unlike online ads, social media marketing and networking (check, check, check), it can be one of the most painful ways to market. Yours truly (the writer), used to compare it to that time I got glass stuck in my leg. It really sucked.
Why Does It Feel So Bad?
Because of rejection, of course. I remember the first time I called about Miranda Park Learning I was so bad, that the lady asked me to repeat everything I said because I had said it at 1,000 miles an hour. Luckily, she gave me a second chance before the inevitable: No.
But Does It Get Better?
It sure does. It’s not that we got used to rejection, it’s that we got used to not taking the “Nos” personally.
The “Nos” give us invaluable information for next time. And, we’ve learned to separate the “Nos” from the human to the business. Meaning, we understand people are not saying no to a personal “self,” but to the fact that right now, they don’t need Miranda Park Learning’s services.
So, How to Keep Focused?
Here are our three tips to cold calling. Tips that are straight out of our tool belt.
- Get leads. For us, since we have our government codes, we get leads from Small Business Specialists directories. But, we don’t always get government leads. We keep our eye out for private industry leads as well.
- Make scripts. This may seem robotic, but it actually helps keep you on track with what to say until it rolls off the tongue. After a while, we stopped using ours. But, it was a great way to stay on track, especially while nervous.
- Keep a log. Jot down whom you’ve called, when, and how/if you’ll follow up. Our spreadsheet has a few categories but these are a great start.
- Stay positive. We love talking about Miranda Park Learning. If the call wasn’t awesome, we take breaks in between as a way to reset.
And Then, You Get a Yes!
This week I spoke to a gentleman, the boss, in fact. He had a nice chat with me, didn’t want to hang up on me, and listened to me. At the end, he said he did have a need for our services and to send our capability statement and information.
It feels funny to say, but I believe the “Yeses” start coming once you stop worrying about how the “Nos” are going to feel.
So, if cold calling is what you have to do for your business now, keep it up. You got this. Believe it or not, we really enjoy it now. We hope this for you as well.
